I did three separate installations before I figured this out, the last using a clone of my MacBook Pro’s drive. It turns out that MagicPrefs, a small utility I used to provide a two-finger right click on my Apple bluetooth mouse was the culprit. But it was not smooth in Catalina on the Hack and it took me a while to figure out what was the cause. It was smooth in Catalina on my 2012 MacBook Pro too, which is much less powerful than my Hackintosh. Scrolling in web pages and programs is buttery smooth in Mojave. Voila! Once again my Wifi was back up and running normally. So I copied the kext from my Mojave drive, installed it, and rebooted. I ended up downloading and installing Hackintool (thanks to Nate8727 and Headkaze!), which has the ability to easily disable the Gatekeeper and mount the disk in read/write mode plus it can install the kext as well. The trick was to figure out how to install it since Catalina has locked down the root directory. However, the Mojave version of this kext could be installed to once again provide support. It turns out that the IO80211Family.kext used in Catalina removed support for this particular card. It took a little bit of research and a lot of trial and error to resolve this issue. When I first installed Catalina I was dismayed to discover that my homebrew Wifi adapter, which uses a real Apple MacPro Airport card, was no longer supported. up or down instead of left or right - MagicPrefs will sometimes miss your swiping and that's just frustrating.īut until Apple brings back the 3 finger App Switcher swipe - presumably around when they realize how useless Mission Control is - MagicPrefs is the best answer I've found for MacBook users to get back this essential gesture.Building a CustoMac Hackintosh: Buyer's GuideĪfter several installations and reverting back to Mojave (thank you Carbon Copy Cloner!) I finally have Catalina running well (Clover v2.4k r4961) on my B85 Powermac G5 here in Central Ohio. You have to do both though - the utility doesn't seem quite as precise as the old gesture used to be - if there are competing 3 and 4 finger swiping gestures, even if they're different, i.e. This is no loss, because those gestures just switch to the useless Mission Control and widgets screen, which no one would ever seriously want to use anyway, much less have a shortcut for. Then, you need to disable pretty much all of Apple's 3 and 4 finger gestures from the Trackpad settings under the System Preferences menu. This app is the only reliable way to get the App Switcher gesture back.īut the only way I found to have the gesture work *consistently* is to enable all 3 and 4 finger gestures - up, down, left and right - to invoke the App Switcher. Apple for some unimaginable reason removed the three finger App Switcher gesture from OS X Lion, probably in favor of the useless Mission Control feature. This wonderful little utility saved my MacBook. Download and use at your own risk on OS X versions newer than 10.8 Mountain Lion. Note: MagicPrefs is more than 5 years old now and is no longer maintained. And to top it all off it features a real-time display of the fingers touching the surface of the mouse that you can enable to test and monitor the way the mouse sees your input.Tracking Speed adds the ability to increase the maximum available speed by an extra 25%.Tap Sensitivity implements an advanced algorithm that impacts a number of factors used to determine taps, all controllable by a single slider. It features the MagicMenu, the ability to bind a variable number of finger clicks and taps to functions like Middle Click, Hold Down Both Mouse Buttons, Spaces, Expose, Dashboard, MagicMenu, etc. MagicPrefs is a toolbar application for OS X which aims to improve the functionality and configuration options of the Apple Magic Mouse. MagicPrefs is no longer maintained, the functionality it provided was made possible by Api's that are now deprecated and reverse engineered private Apple frameworks Note: MagicPrefs is no longer under development.
